Adding to the armory is another AR-15 build. Unlike the other build published earlier, this one is a rifle version of the black guns based on a Black Rain Ordnance upper and lower receiver pair. This project cam about because of the carbine build earlier. I wanted a full size rifle this time with iron sights just like the M16A2 I was issued in the Marine Corps.
This rifle build has some added goodness built in. The similarities with standard service rifle are only skin deep for this project.
As with many of my armory's complement, I start with choosing a barrel to bring the gun to life. The Rock River Arms NM stainless steel barrel was chosen because it is chambered for .223 Wylde. This gives it the ability to shoot the higher pressure 5.56mm ammo as well as .223 Remington rounds, thus giving diversity to this rifle. There are no intentions to use this rifle in any competitions--just a nice to have. I picked up the barrel assembly from ADCO Firearms. They've done some great work cutting and threading four Remington 700 barrels in the past for this guy.
The front sight post is another Trijicon post paired up with a DPMS removable carry handle sporting the usual peep apertures. Inside the BRO upper receiver is a NM bolt carrier by Young Mfg and a BCM gunfighter charging handle. The guts of the lower receiver include a Timney trigger with about a 3.5# trigger pull. Another JP Enterprises' polished, centerless buffer spring helps keep the reciprocation a bit quieter.
Magpul MOE stock and handguards give an updated look to the service rifle. The firing hand wraps around a MIAD pistol grip with a beefier feel than the skinny issue grip.
The timeless look and feel of a full sized AR-15 is unsurpassed by few other guns out there. Except, perhaps the M1A and M14. The stainless steel barrel and bolt carrier, Magpul furniture, and billet receivers make this rifle a looker at the local range. Now if I could just find enough ammo!
