Book Review: Collision Course

I was in the Exchange the other day checking out gun magazines--the periodicals--not the ammo feeding devices and the small book section. There was a paperback titled Collision Course by David Crawford. It had another label on the cover, "A Novel of Survival." I never heard of the author but apparently he wrote another that preceded this title called Lights Out.

The one thing that drew my attention was a quote on the cover by Mark Larue of Larue Tactical, "Buy this book and hand it out to your friends and neighbors." That must have been the selling point point for me as I headed to the checkout line. It helps that I know what Larue Tactical is, as I have bought several black rifle accessories from them and the quality is second to none.  This lead me to believe there must be mention of a black rifle in this book. I bought it and finished the 352 pages in two evenings.

It takes place shortly after the big "Smash," a total and sudden economic breakdown in the United States that has been building up for some time. The story follows two characters separately, Gabe and DJ, and their ways of coming to grips with surviving post cataclysmic events. DJ, a former mall cop and longtime prepper, has well thought out and rehearsed bug out plan but is encumbered by several obstacles on his way to his final destination several hundred miles away and well beyond the reach of the big city. Gabe, living well outside the urban collapse, has no plan but manages well enough on-the-fly and doesn't plan on going anywhere.  The two eventually cross paths in a set of unfortunate events culminating at the end.

The appearance of the black rifle and other essential guns is on several occasions throughout the course of the book. They do what they were designed to do--dispatching life. As much as some people in the wake of recent current events don't like guns or like them even less, it becomes clear that unforeseen events have a way of turning opinions.

Two recurring themes are unmistakable: Those without firepower only become prey for the human animal; and those that don't have, will take from those that do.
